Hatch Collection tees

12 Jun

Hatch Collection TeeWhile there is one huge up side to being pregnant – you get to have a really awesome baby(!), there are a few down sides – exhaustion, feeling sick, body aches etc. For me currently, one of the main bummers is the clothing. I feel like all the stores I love got together this year and said “hey, let’s make all sorts of stuff she’d LOVE to wear, but can’t because of her ever growing bump”. Sigh! I’ve been fortunate that I’ve been able to stretch (and in some cases I really mean stretch!) my current wardrobe and not have too purchase much in the way of “maternity clothes”. This has been good as 1) I don’t like the idea of spending a bunch of money on clothes I’ll only be wearing for a couple of months, and 2) I really don’t like what most stores have to offer in the form of maternity wear.

The one exception I have found to the lackluster maternity style has been Hatch Collection. I actually LOVE the Hatch Collection. These are clothing items designed to be worn before, during and after baby. Now, let me say this – Hatch is not cheap for the average shopper – myself included. I would love to have every piece in their collection, but simply can’t afford to. That being said, there is one item in particular that I have treated myself to, and do not regret for one second. Their Perfect Vee tee, is just that – PERFECT! The boxy cut and lovely fabric drapes beautifully, feels like a dream, and actually manages to make me feel both comfortable and pretty (no small feat!). I managed to get one from their Fall collection on sale earlier this year, and love it so much that I plan on buying another one in plain black. The best part is that I can absolutely see myself wearing these tees even after the bump is gone and the baby is here!

Hatch Collection can be purchases online and shipped to Canada, or at Ani & Wren in Toronto (who sell certain pieces)

PB&J Smoothie

9 Jun

pbj smoothie1I like anything that taste like a guilty pleasure, but actually is pretty good for you. I would put this PB&J smoothie into that category. Perfect for mornings or afternoon snacks when I’m craving something sweet, this smoothie satisfies my sweet tooth as well as providing some healthy fruit and dairy (and a little peanut butter can’t hurt either!)

pbj smoothie2Ingredients (makes 1 large smoothie)
1/2 cup of frozen raspberries (strawberries are also great)
2 heaping tbsp of peanut butter
3 heaping tbsp of non-fat vanilla Greek yogurt
1 1/14 cup skim milk (water would also work)

Put all the ingredients into a blender and blitz until smooth. Set back, put your feet up and enjoy!pbj smoothie3

Tahini Dressing

5 Jun

I don’t know if this is a side effect of being with child, but lately, when I find something I like, I consume it on repeat. This definitely applies to my new favourite Tahini Dressing/Dip. Incredibly easy to make, I’ve been using this to dress hearty salads (potato and macaroni), drizzle over meats (I love it on pork in particular) and as a dip for crunchy crudités (I love this fancy a$$ food for raw veggies and dip!).

Ingredients (make about 1/2 cup):
2 heaping tbsp of tahini paste
Zest and juice of 1 lemon
2 good pinches each of salt and pepper
2-4 tbsp of water

Put the tahini paste into a bowl and add the lemon zest and juice as well as the salt and pepper. Stir until everything is combined. At this point, you’ll have a looser tahini paste. Add the tbsp of water one at a time until you get the consistency you desire – less water equals a thicker dressing, more water equals a looser dressing – it’s really a personal preference, and what you plan on using it for. Done!

How the French do Ham and Cheese

4 Jun

sandwich 1I’m premiering something new here on Relish today! A few weeks back my dear and talented friend Traven pitched the idea of doing video recipes for the blog. I hadn’t really thought about it before then, but it sounded cool so I said YES! So on a crisp Spring morning we picked up supplies at some local Kensington Market shops, then came back to my condo to make video magic. This is our first kick at the can, so please go easy on us! I’m thrilled with what Traven put together, and look forward to making more of these vlogs in the future 🙂

For our first video, I decided to recreate an amazing sandwich Jana and I had in Paris while on our honeymoon. I had no idea a ham and cheese sandwich could be so delicious, but leave it to the French to make the ordinary extraordinary! To learn how to make my favourite French sandwich, watch the video below (and please let me know what you think!)

Here is the hard-working 2 man crew enjoying the sandwich once we cut 🙂sandwich 2

Spring Things

5 May

Spring ThingsOne of the things I LOVE about this time of year is that the bulky clothing layers of Winter can be peeled off to reveal lovely light Spring things. While Spring dressing/shopping has become slightly more difficult for me and my ever-growing bump this year (p.s. why do so many maternity clothes suck?!), I decided to round-up some things I’d love to be wearing if I could (thankfully, some of them I actually still can).

1. This silky chambray pop over shirt from J.Crew is gorgeous to the touch and could be easily dressed up or down.

2. Stack on a couple of this delicate bracelets for a subtle pop of colour. I love the idea of them as grownup friendship bracelets for your closest girlfriends.

3. If your lips are like mine and still suffering from Winter dryness, a sweep of this lovely lip balm from Benefit will have them hydrated with a splash of sheer colour that’s sure to flatter everyone.

4. Oh jumpsuits!! This is the one clothing item I am REALLY missing being able to wear this year. This beauty from Reitmans is not only pretty as all heck, but could be worn all Spring and Summer. The best part is the price!

5. I love a good patterned relaxed pant. Worn on the weekend or to work, you’ll be comfortable (my favourite thing in life) and still look stylish.

6. I actually bought this pretty little dress in black to be worn as a long maternity tunic top. The fabric is light and breezy, and I love that I’ll be able to wear it next year as a dress.

7. The rope detail in this necklace looks sorta nautical to me, which for whatever reason always feels “Spring like”.

8. These are on my “must purchase soon” list. Birkenstock’s were all the rage last Summer, and I don’t know if the fashion gods still love them but I certainly do. I know my soon to be hot swollen preggers feet are going to be crying out for these super supportive sandals very soon. I think this particular strap shape is slightly more elegant than the classic Birk (if you can call a shoe made out of leather, cork and rubber elegant)

9. My darling wife just got this bag in the larger size for work and is loving it. The leather is beyond dreamy, will wear and age incredibly well, and look great for years. The lighter colour shown above is perrrrfect for Spring/Summer.

10. You can’t go wrong with a great denim jacket. Perfect to throw on over a tank or dress when the temps dip down a bit in the evening. This is a wardrobe staple.
